Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is on the rise in the United States. Sexual contact is the primary way that genital herpes spreads.

Symptoms

Like other STI’s, It is possible to experience no symptoms of genital herpes even while infected. That is why routine STI testing is strongly recommended. However, if symptoms are present, these may include:

• Pain, itching or discomfort in the genital area.
• Small red bumps or tiny white blisters.
• Scabs -skin will crust over and form scabs as ulcers heal.

Symptoms can appear a few days to a few weeks after infection so it may not be immediately clear when or where you got the initial infection.

Transmission of herpes

Once infected with herpes, you are contagious and can pass the infection on to other sexual partners. You can be contagious even if you have no visible sores.

If sores are present, these first appear where the infection entered your body (eg. Buttocks, anus, mouth or genital area). You can spread the infection by touching a sore and then rubbing or scratching another area of your body, including your eyes.

Who should get tested?

Those who have noticed any of the symptoms above should get tested immediately. In general, any adult that is sexually active should get tested for STI’s on a regular basis. Even if you don’t have symptoms, routine STI testing is mandatory for good health. It is particularly important if:

• You’re in a new relationship with a new partner
• You’re sexually active but not in a mutually monogamous relationship
• You exhibit any symptoms of an STI such as: genital itching, rashes in the genital area or abnormal discharge

Treatment

Because herpes is a virus, no cure for it exists. However, medications prescribed by your doctor can ease symptoms and reduce the risk of infecting others. Condoms also can help prevent the spread of a genital herpes infection.

Prognosis

Genital herpes will affect each individual differently but as a viral infection, once inside the body it will stay there indefinitely. This means that herpes may be active at some times and dormant at others. Some people experience episodes of a herpes re-activation each year but these tend to be less frequent as time passes.
