Sprains, Strains, Breaks, and Bruises: When to visit the ER
Strains, sprains, broken bones and bruises are all conditions that can be treated by your local emergency clinic. When to visit the emergency clinic
Musculoskeletal injuries or injuries to the bones, joints and limbs are extremely common. The following are conditions that we deal with
- Fracture and broken bones – a break of the bone can be a fracture, a chip, or complete break in the bone.
- Sprain – a sprain is a stretch or tear of a ligament. Sprains may occur after an accident and be accompanied by a feeling of a tear or pop in a joint. This might be followed by pain, swelling, and bruising.
- Acute strains – acute strains are caused by stretching or pulling a muscle or tendon.
- Chronic strains – these are the result of overuse of muscles and tendons through prolonged, repetitive movement.
- Bruises – bruising usually follows injury to one of the limbs or joints. It may occur days after an accident.
Symptoms
All of the conditions above may be accompanied by
- Pain (minor or intense)
- Muscle weakness
- Redness at the site of injury or accident
- Swelling at the site of injury or accident
- Inflammation at the site of injury or accident
- Cramping
Treatment
After taking into consider the injury and the results of any diagnostic tests doctors will recommend one or more of the following treatment options
- RICE regimen (This stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation). This is useful for strains and sprains
- Pain medication
- Cast, splint or bandaging
- Post injury physiotherapy
For more serious injuries, more diagnostic testing and referral to an orthopedic surgeon may be required.
