4 Signs It’s Time to Go to the ER for Bronchitis

Asthma, pneumonia and bronchitis are common lung diseases that can send both kids and adults to the emergency room. All of these conditions can lead to difficulty breathing and at times may be considered a medical emergency.

Bronchitis symptoms

Bronchitis is an inflammation in the lungs. Some people may refer to it as a chest cold. Adults who have acute bronchitis may experience the following

  • Cough that is producing sputum. This may be clear, white, yellowish-gray or green in color — rarely, it may be streaked with blood.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Slight fever and chills.
  • Chest discomfort.

If you have acute bronchitis, you might have had symptoms of a cold for a few days that has now progressively gotten worse.

When it’s time to go to the ER

  • Chest pain – chest pain in bronchitis may be the result of chronic coughing or a sign that the chest infection has worsened.
  • Difficulty breathing – this includes any associated wheezing or shortness of breath. If you’re struggling to breathe or are experiencing difficulty taking in air, seek medical attention immediately.
  • A high fever – One or more of the symptoms above that is accompanied by a fever higher than 100.4 F (38 C) is cause for concern. This is almost certainly a sign of a lung infection.
  • Producing blood in your sputum – producing blood in the sputum is always a cause for concern.

Treatment

Acute bronchitis can last for 10 to 14 days, depending on the severity of your infection. Once in hospital, you will be examined and assessed by a doctor. A combination of supplemental oxygen, nebulizers and medication may be used to treat the worst of your symptoms.

If you are ever in doubt about the seriousness of your symptoms, err on the side of caution and seek medical attention immediately.
