Why an Iron Infusion?

Iron Infusions Now Available At Life Savers ER Locations

Iron-deficiency anemia is a common blood disorder that affects how oxygen is delivered to the red blood cells. With this condition, the body is unable to produce enough iron which may result in feelings of tiredness and fatigue. Iron-deficiency anemia can be treated with a number of different methods. One such option is as an iron infusion.
  • An iron infusion is a way to increase the body’s iron levels quickly, this can be extremely useful in certain medical conditions.
  • The physical benefits of an iron infusion include increased energy and relief of symptoms such as tiredness or fatigue.
  • For those individuals who also suffer from digestive conditions, an iron infusion that brings your iron levels back to normal can have a positive effect on some digestive symptoms you may be experiencing.

Is This You?

Low Iron Affects More Women Than You Might Think

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional shortfalls among women between 35 and 55, and it often develops so gradually that the symptoms get blamed on stress, aging, or a busy schedule. If any of the situations below sound familiar, an iron infusion may restore your energy in a matter of weeks.

Common reasons women need iron infusions

  • Heavy periods or uterine fibroids that deplete iron faster than diet can replace it
  • Postpartum recovery, when iron demands rise sharply after childbirth
  • Preparing for or recovering from surgery, including cosmetic procedures such as tummy tucks, liposuction, and BBL, where healthy iron levels support healing and recovery
  • Digestive conditions such as celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, or prior bariatric surgery that limit how much iron the body absorbs
  • Vegetarian, vegan, or restrictive diets that provide less absorbable iron
  • Oral iron intolerance, when pills cause stomach upset or simply do not raise your levels

Signs your iron may be low

  • Fatigue that sleep does not fix
  • Shortness of breath during routine activity
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Hair thinning and brittle nails
  • Pale skin or dark circles under the eyes
  • Restless legs at night
  • Feeling cold when others are comfortable
A simple blood test at any Life Savers ER location can confirm whether low iron is the cause. No referral is needed, and there is no wait to be seen.

Do I Qualify for an Iron Infusion?

A provider confirms iron deficiency and decides whether an infusion is appropriate before any treatment. Symptoms alone, or a CBC alone, are not enough to qualify.

You may be a candidate if:

  • Age 18 or older
  • Recent labs confirm iron deficiency or iron-deficiency anemia
  • Oral iron is not tolerated, has not improved your levels, or IV replacement is clinically appropriate as determined by the provider
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding, postpartum blood loss or recent surgery may qualify you — the deficiency still has to be confirmed with labs

A same-day infusion may not be appropriate if:

  • You are pregnant — iron infusions during pregnancy require fetal monitoring, which we are not set up to provide
  • There are no recent labs confirming iron deficiency
  • You have had a serious reaction to IV iron
  • Iron overload or elevated iron stores is suspected
  • You have active significant bleeding, unstable vital signs, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or another condition needing emergency evaluation first
  • You are acutely ill or febrile — the provider reviews this before proceeding

Before You Come In

  • Bring a recent CBC and iron studies (ferritin plus iron/TIBC or transferrin saturation) from the last 2 weeks
  • No fasting needed — eat normally and be well hydrated unless told otherwise
  • Bring an updated medication and allergy list, and tell us about any previous IV iron reaction, pregnancy, or recent transfusion
  • Expect monitoring during the infusion and for at least 30 minutes afterward

The $50 Consultation Fee

You can pay a $50 consultation fee online before you come in. It is applied to your treatment total — so the balance at your visit is $349 on the $399 package, or $649 on the $699 package.

The fee covers the provider consultation that determines whether an infusion is right for you. It is non-refundable and valid for 30 days. Walk-in patients pay the same $50 consultation fee at the front desk.

Paying online is optional. Life Savers ER is a freestanding emergency room. If you are having a medical emergency, come in or call 911 — you will be screened and stabilized regardless of ability to pay.

What to Expect

How Does an Iron Infusion Work?

Your iron infusion is a procedure that will take place at a Life Savers ER location. This allows patients who are receiving the infusion to be monitored by clinical staff. During the infusion process, iron is delivered into the body intravenously, meaning it enters the veins via a needle, similar to the way a blood sample is taken. The whole process lasts 3-4 hours and patients will be seated the entire time they receive the infusion.

How effective is intravenous iron?

It may take a few weeks after you start the infusion to experience a noticeable difference in how you feel.
