STDs are common. In 2024 the CDC counted more than 2.2 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in the United States, and nearly 4,000 babies were born with syphilis. Many infections cause no symptoms at all in the early stages, so testing is the only way to know. More so, later treatment may not undo early tissue damage.

When to Get Tested
Get tested if:
- Your partner has been diagnosed with an STD
- You notice unusual discharge from the vagina or penis
- You have burning, itching, sores or bumps near the genitals, anus or mouth
- You have a new partner, or more than one partner
- You are pregnant
- It has been 6 to 12 months since your last routine screening
Many STDs have no symptoms. If you are unsure, testing is the safe choice.
What We Test For
Men (urine sample): gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and a urinary infection check if needed.
Women (urine sample and vaginal swab): gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, and a urinary infection and pregnancy test if needed.
Our physicians can also examine you if herpes is suspected. Herpes is often diagnosed from how the sores look.
What to Expect
- Fast results: most results in under two hours. You can wait or leave, and we call you when they are ready.
- Treatment included: we treat based on your results, either before you leave or with a prescription sent to your pharmacy. Syphilis is the exception: the penicillin shot that treats it is only available at designated centers, so we refer you to a city STI clinic.
- Confidential: your visit and your results stay private. You can take a printed copy of your results.
- Teens: Texas law lets minors consent to their own STD care, and so does Life Savers ER. A parent or guardian does not need to come with you.
- HIV exposure: if you may have been exposed to HIV, come in right away. Medicine that lowers the chance of infection, called PEP, has to start within 72 hours, and we can prescribe it.
- Sexual assault: we do not perform sexual assault exams at Life Savers ER. Go to a hospital emergency room with a forensic nurse examiner. Most large hospital systems have one in-house.
When an STD Problem Needs the ER
Most STD concerns are not emergencies. Come in right away, though, if you have:
- Severe pain low in the belly or pelvis, especially with fever. This can be a serious infection of the reproductive organs.
- Sudden, severe pain or swelling in a testicle. Some causes need treatment within hours.
- Vision changes, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, confusion or new weakness, with a known or possible syphilis infection
- A rash with fever, or sores that are spreading or look infected

Chlamydia
The most common reported STD. Often no symptoms. Left untreated, it can damage a woman’s reproductive organs and make pregnancy difficult.
Gonorrhea
Can infect the genitals, rectum and throat. Symptoms may include painful urination, discharge, or swollen testicles. Untreated, it can cause infertility.
Trichomoniasis
Caused by a parasite and often silent. Women may notice yellow-green discharge, irritation, or pain during sex.
Syphilis
