With the presence of coronavirus (COVID-19), we had almost forgotten about the more common viruses like the cold virus and flu virus. But these viruses have not disappeared. In fact, as offices, schools and businesses open up, experts believe that we are set to have a mini-resurgence this coming cold and flu season.
The cold virus, the flu virus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) -a cold-like virus that is common in children, had reduced in numbers while COVID-19 was around. Protecting ourselves against COVID-19 with masks, social distancing and better hygiene had the unexpected bonus of also protecting us from these other infections.
However, a loosening of restrictions means these viruses will be back.
Symptoms of flu or cold to look out for:
The cold and flu share many common symptoms which includes:
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Fatigue
- Runny nose
- Fever – you usually do not get a fever with a cold. If you do, it may be a sign you’ve got the flu or an infection with a bacteria. A flu is generally more severe with full body aches and tiredness being present.
Treatment
Most adults who develop the cold or flu will have mild to moderate symptoms that can be managed at home with rest, fluids and over-the-counter medications such as aspirin or tylenol. Those with more severe symptoms may need to go to their local emergency room for laboratory diagnosis or more advanced treatment options.
When to get emergency help
The most important thing to pay attention to is your symptoms. Always seek medical help if you have urgent or life-threatening symptoms such as
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty breathing
- Chest pain
Most cases of the cold or flu will go by without issue. For those that are elderly or immunocompromised, pay even closer attention to any worrying symptoms that require urgent medical attention.
